“Then came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, saying, Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?”
— Jeremiah 32: 26-27

Summary: In Genesis the question is asked is there any thing to hard or the Lord? Jeremiah give us the answer in Jeremiah 32:17 that there nothing to hard for thee! Many times our faith can be tested to believe God even if the mountain is in front of us.

THIS method of questioning the person to be instructed is known to teachers as the Socratic method. Socrates was wont, not so much to state a fact, as to ask a question and draw out thoughts from those whom he taught. His method had long before been used by a far greater teacher. Putting questions is Jehovah’s frequent method of instruction. When the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind it was with a series of questions. “Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth? Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee? Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?” and so forth.

Questions from the Lord are very often the strongest affirmations. He would have us perceive their absolute certainty. They are put in this particular form because he would have us think over his great thought, and confirm it by our own reflections. The Lord shines upon us in the question, and our answer to it is the reflection of his light. The Infallible One challenges a contradiction, or even a doubt. “Is anything too hard for me?” is the strongest way of saying that nothing can be too hard for him, for it proclaims defiance to heaven, and earth, and hell, to produce a difficulty which can perplex the Lord.

I invite you, therefore, dear friends, to turn the question over in your minds till the omnipotence of Jehovah shall be your one all-absorbing thought. You cannot think of anything which renders it necessary to put a foot-note to the text. Search ye well, and see if it needs qualification. See whether there is an exception to the rule of absolute omnipotence. Revolve the divine question long and well— “Is anything too hard for me?” May your thoughts be awake at this time! May the truth of the text take possession of your minds, and fill them with its fragrance even as the woman’s box of ointment filled the room with its perfume!

Israel has messed up big time, and for the last time. They would soon be taken over by the Babylonians and taken into a seventy-year captivity for their unfaithfulness, their lust after other gods, and their trust in other nations such as Egypt instead of in God.

Nevertheless, although the Israelites would experience God’s wrath, God’s judgment here doesn’t last forever. God has Jeremiah build a field to symbolize that the people would again return to their land and restore it. God makes mention of his power in these verses to assure the Israelites he intends to fulfill his plan.

Anything Too Hard for the Lord?

“Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:”
Jeremiah 32:17

God is the God of promise. He keeps his word, even when that seems impossible; even when the circumstances seem to point to the opposite.

God’s promises are like the stars; the darker the night the brighter they shine.

“Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”
Genesis 18:4

It is computed that in the Bible there are 30,000 promises, all of which “are yes, and in Him Amen…”(2 Corinthians 1:20); that is, they are promises to the child of God – look up 2 Peter 1:4, and they are all absolutely sure look up Numbers 23:19. Every promise that God has ever made will be fulfilled, and there is a promise to meet your very need. Notice three illustrations of hard things’ that God promised and accomplished:

He promised that the walls of Jericho would fall, but that Rahab’s dwelling on the wall and her family would be spared. This was indeed a hard thing read Joshua 2:1-24; 6:1-25.
He promised to feed Elijah by ravens at Cherith and by a widow at Zarephath. This was a hard thing read 1 Kings 17:2-16.
He promised that Mary would bring forth a son, though she was a virgin. This was a hard thing read Luke 1:26-38.

“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?” (KJV)

We so quickly get discouraged in our work for the Lord. God’s people are frequently heard to say, The work is very hard; it has gone down terribly, and it’ll never be the same again! But why should we accept this defeatist attitude when our God is the God of the impossible? Is your church a dying cause? Does nothing seem to happen? Do no conversions take place? Do few gather for prayer? Why not alter this situation? Why don’’t YOU alter this situation? for your can! Look up Isaiah 43:19 –
“Is anything too hard for the Lord?

There is no promise too hard for God to fulfill.
There is no prayer too hard for God to answer.
There is no problem too big for God to solve.
There is no person too hard for God to save.

Yet, if there’s nothing too hard for God, why doesn’t it happen? Because men limit God. Psalm 78:41 says, “Yeah, they turned back and tempted God and limited the Holy One of Israel.”

How is it possible for the Creator to be limited by his creature? Because He allows it; He allows Himself to be chained and bound, restricted from working in our lives.

We chain Him with our unwillingness. God will not force Himself upon you. He wants to bless you, but you must be willing to receive it.

We chain Him with unconcern. When we are completely indifferent, it breaks His heart, because He cannot move in an apathetic life.

We chain Him with unreasonableness, our prejudices, pre-conceived ideas. We do not want to give up our dirt for His diamonds.

We chain Him with uncleanliness. Unconfessed, un-repented of sin keeps God from blessing us and working with us.

We chain Him with our unbelief. Adrian Rogers says, “Faith is the channel through which the risen Lord pours His life into you. But you will tie His hands by unbelief. Faith is the key that causes the shackles to fall from the hands of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

LET’S PRAY THUS;
O thou to whom nothing is hard, we adore thee! We worship thee with all our hearts, and this day we believingly link our weakness with thine omnipotence. We trust thee for life, for death, for eternity. Dear Saviour, we trust thee now with all our sins and sorrows. Nothing is too hard for thee, therefore save thy poor servants according to the riches of thy grace.
“A guilty, weak, and helpless worm,
On thy kind arms I fall;
Be thou my strength and righteousness,
My Jesus and my all.”
