“When the wicked, even my enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.”
(Psalm 27:2)

Summary: Everybody has spiritual enemies. If you say you do not have, then you must have dropped from somewhere out of this realm because Jesus Himself who came from Heaven had and they hated Him and did not hide it. They would have killed Him before His time if not that He had a ministry to fulfil.

A powerful verse from the beautiful Psalm of David. In the broader sense, this verse talks about how the saints (believers) are protected in Christ. I would like to narrow it down to what God has shown me through this verse.

When we walk in the revelation of our new identity, which is Christ Himself, we see that we live by the life of God. This life is called “Zoe” in Greek, which literally means the life that God lives by! We live by faith in the grace of Jesus and this faith operates in the realm of redemption. The finished work of Jesus is that realm of redemption. Creation has no answers to these terminal diseases but the Broken body and shed Blood of Jesus speaks death to those deadly viruses and Zoe life to the believer! Job had a hedge around him that protected him from all evil. We have the eternal Blood of Jesus protecting us and though we live in this world, we are not of this world!
David boasts in the Lord in the first verse. He says when the Lord is our light and our salvation, whom shall we fear? When Jesus is the strength of our life, whom shall we be afraid? I’m reminded of a wonderful testimony that I heard in a mega church in Singapore during the time of SARS, a deadly virus that was rampant in South East Asian countries. Out of the 10,000 member congregation, not one person was affected by this deadly virus and all of them were supernaturally protected by His Blood! Use doctors, take medicines if need be, but let your trust be in Christ and His finished work! Fallen creation is still under the cursed world system and the true blessed hope only rests in the redemptive finished work of Christ.

David says that his enemies stumbled and fell when they came to eat his flesh. How did they stumble? Jesus is that Stumbling Block! He is that Corner Stone that stumbles the enemy!

Psalms 27:2
says, “When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.” Here, the Bible is saying that the wicked shall stumble and fall. Sometime ago, a sister wanted to travel. Unknown to her, her enemies planned to kill her on the journey for they have already seen in the spirit that she would be traveling. The sister being a prayerful person prayed very well before she embarked on the journey. As she was waiting for a taxi with her suitcases placed in front of her, a prophet came to where she was standing, pointed at her suitcase and prophesied saying, “The owner of this luggage must not travel. If she does, she would certainly die.” But the sister who was not afraid at all, confronted him and said, “Mr. Prophet, I have already committed this journey into the hands of the living God. He knows about it and He that keepeth Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. He also preserves my going out and my coming in.” Apparently, her enemies who knew about the trip arranged for that evil prophecy in order to instill fear into her. Most times, the enemies employ the weapon of fear to get at their victims. But unfortunately for the enemies of this sister, she did not entertain any fear. Five days later, this so-called prophet ran into a train at a railway crossing and that was it!

Nobody could explain how it happened. What the enemy planned for the sister went back to the enemy.
The word of God has very bad news for the wicked. Let us look at some of them. Job 8:22says, “They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.”
Job 11:20
says, “But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.”
Job 18:6
says, “The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him.”
Psalms 7:1
says, “O Lord my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me.” Verses 5-6 say, “Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Arise, O Lord, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded.”
Psalms 146:9
says, “The Lord preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow; but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.”
Isaiah 3:11
says, “Woe unto the wicked! It shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.” Isaiah 48:22: “There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked.” Isaiah. 57:20-21 says, “But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.”
Jeremiah 30:23
says, “Behold, the whirlwind of the Lord goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked.”

We are in the last days and the Bible makes us to understand the signs of the last days, which includes the fact that: Israel will be gathered again, there shall be false prophets all over the place, there shall be fear, the hearts of men will fail them, there will be increase in knowledge, lawlessness and corruption will increase and another sign of the last days which has been neglected is that there would be intense satanic revival and wickedness in the realm of the spirit. The devil will launch a desperate attack on the human race. When a desperate man is fighting, he fights with a strong determination. The devil is on his last desperate and final attack. My prayer is that you will not be consumed in Jesus’ name. And all those incensed against you must stumble and fall in Jesus name!

The wicked came against me to eat up my flesh meaning to tear me apart. Our fear tears us apart individually and collectively. Fear will have us making accommodations where there are none. Looking for refuge where there is none.
My enemies and foes are synonymous in the sense but nuanced semantically that they can be different.
Personal enemies
And enemy is someone or something actively opposed to someone or something.
A foe is is an opponent who may not actively oppose but do not care for something or someone. Either way David writes:
They stumbled meaning they were impeded and fell means they fell down and did not succeed!
Isaiah 54:17 NKJV
No weapon formed against you shall prosper,And every tongue which rises against you in judgmentYou shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,And their righteousness is from Me,”Says the Lord.
My Fire is Greater than my Fear
Psalm 27:3 NKJV
Though an army may encamp against me,My heart shall not fear;Though war may rise against me,In this I will be confident.
David said my Fire is Greater than my fear.

Enemies will encamp against me!
Wars may rise against me.
My heart shall not fear!!!
David is saying that his emotions will not get the best of him but his Fire for the Lord meaning his faith will prevail!!!

The LORD is my light and my salvation: Like many psalms, King David wrote this from a season of trouble. Yet it is a song of confidence and triumph: because David was not in darkness or ultimate peril because the LORD was his light and salvation.

God Himself brought light to David’s life. He did not despair in darkness and all that it represented. His life was filled with the LORD, and his life was filled with light.

When the wicked came against me…they stumbled and fell: David remembered how God had proven Himself reliable in the past. There were times when the wicked or even an army came against him, yet God still showed that He was David’s light, his salvation, and his strength.

David’s confidence in God was battle-tested. He did not have fair-weather faith that lived in always-easy circumstances. This isn’t the joy of a man in a comfortable monastery; this is the song of a man who knew God’s goodness even in danger and despair.

They stumbled and fell: “God’s breath blew them off their legs…. This was literally true in the case of our Lord in Gethsemane, when those who came to take him went backward and fell to the ground; and herein he was a prophetic representative of all wrestling believers who, rising from their knees shall, by the power of faith, throw their foes upon their faces.” (Spurgeon)

There was great wisdom in the prayer of John Wesley: “Lord, if I must contend, let it not be with thy people.” When we have for foes and enemies those who hate good men, we have at least this consolation, that God is not on their side, and therefore it is essentially weak. William S. Plumer

When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. There is no such dainty dish to a malicious stomach, as the flesh of an enemy; it goes down without chewing, and they swallow it up whole like cormorants. But though malice have a ravenous stomach, yet she hath but slow digestion; though her teeth be sharp, yet her feet are lame, at least apt to stumble; and this made well for David, for when his enemies came upon him to eat up his flesh, because they came upon the feet of malice, they stumbled and fell. A man may stumble and yet not fall; but to stumble and fall withal, is the proper stumbling of the wicked, and especially of the maliciously wicked; and such, it seems, was the stumbling of David’s enemies, because the enemies were such; and such I doubt not shall be the stumbling of mine enemies, because mine are such; and of what then, of whom now, should I be afraid?
