“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. (Matt 5:13)

Think about salt when it’s used as a preservative. When salt is rubbed into meat, it’s purpose is to slow down decay. I believe one of the points Jesus was making to us about being salt is this – as His disciples we are to act as a preservative to this world. As a preservative, we become sort of a moral disinfectant. We help to keep things fresh and alive. We help to defeat corruption and poisonous decay. We add purity where behavior is questionable. And one of the things we can do as Christians to accomplish this is to retain the kingdom virtues, that is, hold on to what we know is true according to the Scripture, and cling to what is right. This is especially important when all about us we see the decline of morals, and values, and integrity, when doing the right thing and standing on principles that are timeless are challenged.

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

“But if the salt loses its flavor, how can you make it salty again?”
Our salt today is purified and does not lose its taste; but the salt of that day contained impurities and could lose its flavor, could lose its saltiness. This coarse, impure salt from the inland sea deposits of this area was susceptible to deterioration, leaving savourless salt-like crystals as residue, and especially what was gathered from the Dead Sea in Palestine, contained many impurities. If (cf. v. 43) it loses its saltiness, its savory quality, it cannot be regained so such salt is worthless. ; What was used as salt in ancient times, however was sometimes diluted by the addition of white sand, which made it “unsalty.” Such salt was cast on the roadbeds to inhibit the growth of weeds. it is a saltlessness nothing can season and it is of no use to season anything else. It is like an exploded shell, a burnt-out crater, a spent force. This is a warning for all Christians.

Christians, can and sometimes do cease to function as the “salt” of the world, and it is against this that Jesus warned.

Jesus is saying that to lose your saltiness is to become foolish. To become foolish is to lose your value, to lose your impact, to lose your significance, or to lose your effectiveness in this world.

How do we lose our impact in this world? Well, when you join your friends in their sinful lifestyle. When you get drunk like they do, you become one like them. When you are as dishonest and greedy as they are. When you sin as they sin. Or when you just keep quiet while they are robbing the bank! That is when you lose your impact for God in this world.

We therefore make fools out of ourselves. We claim to be people of the kingdom of light. But we live like people of the kingdom of darkness. What else can be more foolish than that?

Salt in a preservative sense. Are you concerned about a decline in moral standards and indifference to biblical truth? Integrity of character is more important and relevant than ever. The popular perception of Christianity continues to be influenced and shaped by culture rather than orthodox Christian beliefs and values.

When believers hold to what is true and are faithful followers of Jesus, we preserve what is right, true, and good (Pro 1:3; 2:9).

As agents of purity. Are you more concerned with the purity of your food than the purity of your heart and faith? Our tendency, as humans, is to try to change what or who surrounds us to suit our needs. Even when we try to change ourselves or life, we tend to work on our outer image rather than our internal being.

We need to maintain a sense of purity in our own hearts and minds if we want to be a purifying influence in the world around us and the lives of others (Micah 6:8).

How can we maintain our saltiness as the salt of the earth?

We need to spend personal time with the Lord in prayer and worship, take in the truth of His Word and be renewed in our minds, be filled and empowered by His Spirit, and remain in fellowship with other citizens of God’s Kingdom.

REFLECTION—
If you don’t want to lose your saltiness—influence others for good, do what is right, true and good, and pursue purity of heart and mind.

PRAYER FOCUS—
If and when you are concerned about losing your saltiness as a citizen of God’s Kingdom, seek the Lord in prayer and ask Him to show you if that is so and for assurance and encouragement in how to be the salt of the earth in honor of Jesus Christ.
