“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” — 1 John v. 4, 5.

WHAT is this “world” that we have to overcome? Did not God make the world, and did he not see “every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good”? Yes, he did; but, after sin entered this world, men came under its power, and, now, by “the world” is meant all mankind who remain under the power of sin, and are enemies to God. “The world” means the whole corrupt mass of human society out of which God has taken a people whom he has chosen for himself, whom he quickens by his Divine Spirit, and whose business it is to overcome the world. They will find that the world— the power of evil— will war against them, and they also must war against it, and the issue of the battle must not long be doubtful. There remains for us only one of two courses; either the world must overcome us, and we must yield to it; or, else, we must overcome the world, and cause it to submit to us.

Galatians 5:1. “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.”

“There is not a promise in the Word which shall be withheld,”
“In the depths of tribulations let this freedom comfort you; amidst waves of distress let it cheer you; when sorrows surround thee let it be thy solace…Thou art also free to the throne of grace. It is the believer’s privilege to have access at all times to His heavenly Father.”

One of the greatest promises is pardon from our sins. From guilt. From the servitude of Satan. The ancient prophet assured us that God will “abundantly pardon” (Isa 55;7). The liberty we enjoy in the Lord has released us from the shackles of sin. As we come to know the truth. Believe the Truth. And obey the Truth. We can be free indeed (Jn 8:32-33).

We’ve been given the power to access and enjoy God’s promises and pardon. The Gospel is God’s power to salvation (Rom. 1:16). We have been given the power to over Satan’s schemes (Eph 6:10-17). The power to accomplish for the Lord even more than we think or ask (Eph. 3:20-21). And to be guarded by God’s power through trials and tribulations (1 Pet 1:5).

Christ has set us free from the slavery of this world so that we can do amazing things for God

Know your enemy.
Speaking of Satan, Paul said, “We are not ignorant of his designs.” We should be well acquainted with the character and strategy of the Evil One, neither dwelling on it too much nor ignoring his active and destructive work: “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation,” said Jesus to his sleepy disciples; and in the Lord’s Prayer we say, “Deliver us from evil” or from the Evil One.

Keep yourself in the love of God. Jude, writing about worldly people devoid of the Spirit who in the last days would scoff and divide the church, went on to assure his readers that God “is able to keep you from falling”; on their part they were to build themselves up in their faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, and keep themselves in the love of God. It is sometimes said that the Christian who sins is a fool because, if he abides in Christ, he need not sin. In the same way, although we must recognize Satan’s power, we are not to be frightened of it. If we walk in the light with Christ, we have nothing to fear from the powers of darkness. Paul knew that “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers…”absolutely nothing, could separate a Christian from the love of God in Jesus Christ. Therefore if we keep ourselves in that love, we are perfectly and eternally safe. The Evil One will not touch us.

The power of the cross can dramatically release people from satanic bondage. Reading verses and passages about the cross are powerful weapons in spiritual warfare, especially in the most severe expressions of it. Generally speaking, a prayerful and confident trust in God’s power over Satan through the cross of Christ is all that is required.

Be strong in Christ. Paul instructed the Ephesian church: “Be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.” Christ is “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named…all things [are] under his feet” and “he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” In particular, our victory over Satan is to be seen in the cross of Christ, for it was there that God “disarmed the principalities and powers,” and it is “by the blood of the Lamb” that we are able to conquer the accuser of the brethren.

Without the pain and reality of the cross, without the sacrifice of Christ on our behalf, without the power of the Resurrection and his final victory over sin and death, we would still be bound. We would still live defeated. We would still be groping in darkness.

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace”
(Ephesians 1:7).
It provides freedom to all those who believe. Freedom from the shackles of sin. Freedom from shame. Freedom from fear. Freedom from disgrace. Freedom from worry. Freedom from hopelessness. Freedom from despair. Freedom from addiction. Freedom from guilt. Freedom from darkness and eternal separation from God.

Put away all trust in yourself; and come and trust in God as he is revealed in his Son Jesus Christ; and you have received that salvation which will keep on progressing until all sin shall be driven out of you, and you shall dwell for ever where Jesus is, — as unselfish as Jesus is, — as pure, as blessed, as glorious as he is. God grant this to us all, for Christ’s sake! Amen.
