“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
Philippians 4:6

Summary: Don’t let anxiety rule over you, but through prayer, supplication and thanksgiving bring your requests before God.

Be Anxious For Nothing? How Is That Possible?
On the surface, this seems like one of those, “Surely, you can’t be serious,” kind of commands.

mean, anxious for nothing? For NOTHING? In many ways, life is a giant, mottled gray tapestry of worries, anxieties, struggles, and fears.

Will I have enough to pay the bills?
Will my child recover from this sickness?
Will I have enough time to get all my work done and still spend time with the family?
Will I need to take care of my parents?
You get the point.

How can anyone possibly be anxious for nothing?

Yes! the command to not be anxious or fearful seems overwhelming. Impossible. Unrealistic.

But if God commands it, he also empowers us to obey.

Life is too complicated and frustrating and confusing to navigate on our own. The burdens are too heavy for us to bear.

The command to be anxious for nothing is really a sweet invitation wrapped in a command. It’s God saying, “Don’t be silly and try to handle all this on your own. Let me take care of the details. I’ve got this.”

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy — meditate on these things.
Philippians 4:6-8

We are instructed to be anxious for nothing. Or another way of phrasing this according to the text is to not be troubled with cares. When we are born into God’s kingdom, we have the assurance that God cares for our needs and God has a plan for us. The Bible says that God fashioned the days for me before I was born.

When faced with a challenge or crisis, our tendency is to get all anxious about it. But God does not want us to react this way. He does not want us to be anxious about anything. Instead, whatever the problem is, He wants us to go to Him in prayer and supplication, telling Him what we need and thanking Him for the answer. When we do that, His peace, which surpasses all understanding, will guard our hearts and minds from all worries, anxieties and fears.

God is true to His Word. As you pray and cast your care to Him, you will find His peace setting your heart and mind at rest. So be anxious for nothing—let the One with whom nothing is impossible take care of it for you!
