“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
2nd Corinthians 5:21

Our Lord, we marvel at this declaration that there is a kind of righteousness that does not come from us but comes from you, and it’s that righteousness that can save. We rejoice in that today. Bless us, we pray, as we open this up. We ask in Christ’s name. Amen.

We see here a metaphor, a form of figurative expression used to emphasize a point: that Jesus became “sin. ” More literally, he became a “sin offering. ” But a sin offering was that on which the guilt of the sins of others was symbolically placed. In Jesus’ case, our guilt was literally placed on him when he came as the Lamb of God to take away the sin of the world.

“Man was created to glorify God and to enjoy fellowship with Him. God’s purpose in saving us is to bring us back into right relationship with Him so that we may enjoy fellowship with Him.”

That is quite a difficult concept to grasp. Everything within us resists it as if it were not true. The American Standard Version of the Bible has this Scripture written in this way: 2Corinthians 5:21(ASV) Him (Jesus) who knew no sin He (God) made to be sin on our behalf; that we might become the righteousness of God in him. The King James Version has it written like this: (KJV) For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (Jesus). The phrase might be made comes from the Greek word ginomai which means to cause to be. Check out what the Strong’s Hebrew and Greek Dictionary says about this word: G1096 γίνομαι ginomai (ghin’-om-ahee) A prolonged and middle form of a primary verb; to cause to be (gen-erate), that is, (reflexively) to become (come into being), used with great latitude (literally, figuratively, intensively, etc.)

Please take notice: This message is not for the immature Christian who thinks that they have to accomplish a list of good works in order to become something in the Lord Jesus Christ or that they must maintain the status of Christian by doing good things. It is solely for the one who realizes that Jesus has completed the work and that we, through faith in Him, have become something in God; and not just something, but the righteousness that God’s Law requires. We are no longer considered law-breakers, but now, through Christ Jesus, we have come into right standing with God.

God is all light and glory; He is perfect in purity and holiness; He cannot be approached by sinful creatures. The prophet Isaiah once had a vision in which he saw the Lord God on His throne. Heavenly beings around the throne were praising God, saying, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory.” (Isaiah 6:3)

To enjoy fellowship with God we must have a righteousness that is acceptable to Him. Forgiveness is like taking a bath; righteousness is like putting on clean clothes. We take a bath that we might be cleansed from all impurities; we put on proper clothes that we might be suitable dressed to appear before people.

If we were going to appear before a great king, we would be very concerned about our clothing. When we think about coming into the presence of the holy God to enjoy fellowship with Him, we realise we must be “clothed” in a special way. We must be clothed with a righteousness that is acceptable to God.

What kind of righteousness does God accept? The only kind of righteousness which God accepts is a perfect righteousness. God Himself must provide this righteousness for us.

God has done three wonderful things to make us perfectly righteous in His sight: (1) He has ended our old life in Adam. (2) He has given us a new life in Christ. (3) He has given Christ to us as our righteousness.

To put it simply, God gets rid of all that we are and gives us Christ as our righteousness. Let us see how God does this.

God has done three wonderful things to make us perfectly righteous in His sight: (1) He has ended our old life in Adam. (2) He has given us a new life in Christ. (3) He has given Christ to us as our righteousness.

Through the blood of Christ, God has removed our sins from us forever. He has cleared us of all charges against us. He has justified us freely by His grace.

Beloved, the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ, which God blessed Abraham with by faith when he was uncircumcised and then gave him the act of circumcision as a seal of this righteousness is available to all not just to us Christians.

Beloved God orchestrated it this way so that Christians though being special and unique would not form a closed group and keep all others out but would open their doors to all, teach them the faith and through the work of Precious Holy Spirit lead them to the faith to have faith in Jesus and worship Jesus so they also be counted as righteous.

Beloved, this righteousness is available to all, everybody, the prostitute, the alcoholic, the idol worshipper, the satanist, the cheat, the gossip, the slanderer etc etc.

The difference between the saved and the unsaved is that the saved has taken advantage of the availability of the righteousness of God through Jesus and is enjoying it but the unsaved hasn’t.

Beloved this means, the righteous and the unrighteous all commit sin or make mistakes but for the righteous all his sins and errors are squashed away by God and God has chosen not see these sins or consider them and God would never ever disgrace them because of their sins but He will always cover and protect them and bless them in leaps and bounds.

For the unrighteous, your sins are counted against you and you shall pay for them. God will punish you for them because you will be judged according to your actions or works.

PRAYER
Dear dying Lamb, you took the guilt of our sins on yourself and you were treated by the Father as if guilty yourself for our sins. He turned away his face and you bore God’s wrath against sin as if you had been sin itself, when you hung on Calvary’s tree. May we never forget that great sacrifice you made for us. may we never forget the gift of your perfect righteousness. Amen.
