By common proverb, we have come to believe that there is nothing in a name, and so parents sometimes name their children, not thinking that that particular title will be either a hindrance or a help.

Strange mistake. You have no right to give to your child a name that is lacking either in euphony or in moral meaning. It is a sin for you to call your child Jehoiakim or Tiglath-pileser. Because you yourself may have an exasperating name is no reason why you should give it to those who come after you.

But how often we have seen some
name, filled with jargon, rattling down from generation to generation, simply because someone long ago happened to be afflicted with it. Institutions and enterprises have sometimes, without sufficient deliberation, taken their nomenclature. Mighty destinies have been decided by the significance of a name.

There are men who all their life long toil and tussle to get over the influence of some unfortunate name. While we may, through right behavior and Christian demeanor, outlive the fact that we were named with the name of a despot or an infidel or a cheat, how much better it would have been if we all could have started life without any such encumbrance.

Years ago when I was a small boy, I was used to suddenly wake up in the middle of the night, unable to speak, move or do anything for that matter. Doctors call it, sleep paralysis, a transitional state between wakefulness and sleep, characterized by a temporary inability to move muscles. According to them sometimes it can be accompanied by hallucinations also. I never had hallucinations but still, the experience was scary enough.

My Pastor had a different opinion. He concluded I come under the attack of an evil spirit in my sleep. He prayed and instructed me to rebuke the situation in the name of Jesus if it happens again. It did happen again but how am I supposed to rebuke in Jesus’ name when I can’t speak? Hence I rebuked it in my mind saying “In the name of Jesus…” and that paralyzed feeling left me before I could finish the thought.

Is it a medical condition as the doctors say? Was it an evil spirit as my Pastor said? I do not know. But I certainly know one thing. Just the thought of Jesus’ name was enough. That night for the first time, I realized there’s power in Jesus’ name.

So today, I want to take this opportunity to share with you about that mighty power. In Proverbs 18:10 King Solomon wrote: “The name of the Lord is like a strong tower; the righteous person runs to it and is set safely on high.” Solomon likened the Lord’s name to a strong tower for 3 reasons.

1. We have healing in His Name
   (Read John 21:25; Luke 7:1-10;
2. We have authority in His Name
   (Read Luke 4:41; Acts 7:55; Luke 10:17)
3. We have victory in His Name
   (Read Job 14:5-12; 1 Corinthians 15:55; Romans 8:38-39)

Someone said, ‘The day of miracles is not past, because the God of miracles is still present!” I said these things because I want you also to experience the mighty power in Jesus’ name. There’s power in that name because he is alive and not dead. It doesn’t matter how big your problem is, how bad your sickness is or how powerful your demons are? All that is under Jesus’ feet. The victory is yours. Just claim it in the name of Jesus.
