“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever.”—Hebrews 13:8

Summary: The amazing things that Jesus did on earth are recorded in the New Testament. The bible tells us that He is exactly the same now as He was in the pages of the Gospels. All that Jesus did for people in the first century, He is able and willing to do for you today!

It is well that there is one person who is the same. It is well that there is one stable rock amidst the changing billows of this sea of life.

But greater things have changed than we; for kingdoms have trembled in the balances. We have seen a peninsula deluged with blood, and mutiny raising its bloody war whoop. Nay, the whole world hath changed; earth hath doffed its green, and put on its somber garment of Autumn, and soon expects to wear its ermine robe of snow. All things have changed. We believe that not only in appearance but in reality, the world is growing old. The sun itself must soon grow dim with age; the folding up of the worn-out vesture has commenced; the changing of the heavens and the earth has certainly begun. They shall perish; they all shall wax old as doth a garment; but for ever blessed be him who is the same, and of whose years there is no end.

“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
Acts 1:11

As we read the pages of the Gospels, we see Jesus Christ doing astounding things — healing the sick, cleansing lepers, casting out demons, even raising the dead. By His words and His mighty works He led thousands to faith in Him. He also called and empowered His followers to go forth to preach and perform similar mighty works in His name (Mark 16:15-20).

Too many have fallen for the defeatist line of thinking that says, “Well, those were special days and we shouldn’t expect to see such things in our time.” However, that is incorrect. In fact, as we just read in Hebrews 13:8, Jesus never changes! The Scripture guarantees us that Jesus is “the same yesterday and today and forever.” And as the angels said to the onlookers as Jesus ascended back to heaven (Acts 1:11), “This same Jesus … will come back…”

There is no difficulty, no obstacle, no vice, no sin, no illness, no demonic harassment, that is outside Jesus’ power to overcome in your life. The “same Jesus” who overcame all these things and more on earth 20 centuries ago is able and willing to do the same in your life today. Remember, there is nothing that is beyond the control of Him Who is “Lord of all.” He had all authority two millennia ago, and He still has all authority in all situations today, because Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever!

The Greek word for the “same” emphatically states that Jesus Christ is unchangeable! What good news this is in a world where things are changing at lightning speed! Jesus Christ is the one Person we can depend on to be the same, regardless of the time or the spirit of the age. We don’t need to refigure who Jesus is, what He thinks, or what His message is, because He is the same — and everything He represents is the same — yesterday, today, and forever!
The word “yesterday” is the Greek word exthes, and it depicts all time that ever was up until this present moment. It describes the past. The word “today” is the Greek word semeron, and it means today or at this very moment or this current age. It depicts the present. But in the Bible when the words “yesterday and today” are used in one phrase, as they are used here, it also portrays continuity.
The words “yesterday and today” are an Old Testament expression to denote continuity (see Exodus 5:14; 2 Samuel 15:20). So here we find that Jesus isn’t one way in the past and another way in the present. Whoever He was in the past is exactly who He is in the present. There is continuity in Jesus Christ! Therefore, if you discover Jesus of the past, you have also discovered Jesus of the present, and you have discovered Jesus of the future, because He is continuously the same. The word “forever” in Greek means into all the ages of the future. This phrase depicts all future time to come, including all ages that will ever be known. Hence, it describes the future.
Hebrews 13:8 carries this idea:
“Jesus Christ is the exactly the same in the past, in the present, and in the future.”

“Jesus Christ is the exactly the same in the past, in the present, and in the future.”
THE ONLY CHANGE IS THE CHANGE FROM BEING THE SACRIFICIAL LAMB TO THE GREAT LION OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH!

I don’t know about you, but I am so thankful that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for all future ages! With all the sweeping changes happening in the world right now, I thank God that Jesus isn’t one of them! Whoever He was in the past is who He is in the present and who He will be forever!

When it comes to change, many people simply don’t want to, many people try to resist, especially if they are used to certain habits, certain behaviours or certain lifestyles but the reality is that many things do change whether we like it or not, our bodies change as we get older, the world around us is changing all the time with new technologies and scientific discoveries and for many, an ever-changing world brings fear and uncertainty.
But isn’t it wonderful to know that even in an ever-changing world, our Lord and Saviour Jesus doesn’t change? The Hebrew writer reminds us that there is peace and reassurance in knowing that Jesus doesn’t change.

A little over 2,000 years ago Jesus came from heaven to earth, was born of a virgin, grew up and ministered to multitudes, healed the sick, raised the dead, cleansed the lepers, and much more. Then He died on a cross to bear our sins and rose again from the dead, so that we might be saved through repentance and faith in Him.

Sometime yet ahead, the bible promises that “this same Jesus” will come again a second time to earth to resurrect and gather to Himself all the faithful redeemed from all ages.

If you haven’t already done so, turn your heart and your life over to Jesus Christ. Receive the salvation that He died to provide for you. Accept Him, love Him, serve Him — you will be eternally happy that you did!

MY PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, in the midst of this ever-changing world environment, I am so thankful that Jesus Christ never changes! He was in the past exactly who He is in the present and precisely who He will be forever! Lord, I am in awe of Your unchanging love and Your unending mercy. In a society that is morally, politically, and economically shifting, I boldly proclaim: On Christ the solid Rock I take my firm stand! Truly all other ground is sinking sand. Help me, Holy Spirit, to stand strong for You, no matter who around me may abandon their position of faith.
I pray this in Jesus’ name!

SHALOM!
