IN THE DAYS OF HIS POWER SERIES.

TOPIC: THE LORD IS MY LIGHT, SALVATION AND PERFECTION

“The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid?”
(Psalm 27:1).

In this context, David is proclaiming that God is with him even in the midst of trouble. This is a common theme in his writings, because of so many times David had seen this truth already. From facing a lion in the wilderness to confronting the giant Goliath, David had experienced God’s presence and deliverance.

HE IS MY LIGHT!
The Lord is my light…”
Our Father in heaven sent his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the light of the world (Jn 8:12). “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light” God is the light for our path, he is the light of truth, and he is the illumination of our salvation.

When the Bible talks about God being light, it is in sharp contrast to the darkness that exists in this world, and in each one of us. David was keenly aware that the darkness within men, their sinful nature, brought all manner of darkness into the world.

Personalizing Scripture can add a richness to a passage. This translation takes David’s sentiments and speaks them directly to God. So the reading of it, especially out loud, becomes a special moment of prayer.
“Light, space, zest — that’s God! So, with him on my side I’m fearless, afraid of no one and nothing”

GOD IS MY SALVATION
We do not trust in might or wealth, or any manifestation of our own strength to save us. We surrender to God and put our faith in his perfect Son. Our ultimate salvation from our sin and from the wrath of God for sin (John 3:36) is reflected in the myriad ways God saves us from harm every day.

When we are in need, the Lord is our salvation. When we are full of his abundant blessing, the Lord is still our salvation. God has promised to bless us, we have only to look to him in faith. One thing we must not do, is fear, for “the Lord is the stronghold of my life…”

The only true threat to David was his own weakness. When his heart was steadfast, there was simply nothing to fear. For the Christian, we have such a hope that we can trust God in any and every circumstance. When times are good, we can thank God and trust him to always provide and protect us, remembering we have nothing that he has not given us, even when what we have is by the grace of God to bless the work of our own hands. When times are difficult, we thank God, and we trust in him who is sovereign and does absolutely everything for our good. As stewards of what is given, we seek to use what God has provided to live according to his will, and trust him for the results of righteous living.

GOD MY PERFECTION
“As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?
God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect”.
2 Samuel 22:31-33

God is a perfect God in all his ways and no imperfection can be seen with God. Whatever he does or says is perfect. His ways are perfect; His words are perfect and have capacity to make us perfect.

Because we are created in the image of God the ultimate desire of God for us it to be perfect in all our own ways too.

“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Therefore any kind of imperfection in man is an act of disobedience to the word of God which has to be corrected. And any one that will get to heaven at the end of the earthy journey must strive towards perfection according to the will of God.”
Matthew 5:48

  • God gave us his words for our perfection and his spirit to guide us into all truth in order to be perfect.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17:

As we read the word of God, listen to it being preached to us at all times, or as we preach it to others, we must never lose touch of the primary purpose of it which is perfection.

God is a perfect God and He is perfect in His ways and in what He does, and consequently requires perfection from us because we were created in His image.

God is perfect is his power and that is why there is no impossibility with him. If God has not done something, it is either He will not do it or He has a time in mind to do it and can never be because He can not do it.

Believe that you shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; Wait for the Lord!
In the name of our God, who creates us, redeems us, sustains us, and hopes for our wholeness. Amen.
