TOPIC: THE POWER OF DIVINE LOVE

“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
John 13:34, 35

In today’s world trembling with terror and hatred, our knowledge of divine love is of utmost importance. We bear responsibility to understand and testify that Heavenly Father and Jesus the Christ are glorified, living, and loving personages.

Their love is divine by definition. Scriptures also describe it as perfect. It is infinite because the Atonement was an act of love for all who ever lived, who now live, and who will ever live. It is also infinite because it transcends time.

The great German Reformer, Martin Luther, in his summation on God’s love, says, “Love is an image of God, and not a lifeless image, but the living essence of the divine nature which beams full of all goodness.”

“Therefore, dearly beloved, “They are the true disciples of Christ, not who know most, but who love most.” Fredrick Spanheim, German Theologian.

One of Satan’s main activities among Christians is to destroy love for God and love for one another. He well knows the value and power of divine love. He knows what it can accomplish and what it will do for us individually, so he works determinedly to exterminate this plant of heavenly origin from every Christian’s life and the true church.

This commandment of Jesus to love was not in itself new. It was part of the instructions given to Moses, “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.”
Leviticus 19:18.

This verse contains some divine prohibitions. Firstly, God says, “Thou shalt not avenge.” This is another way of saying, “Thou shalt forgive.” With the spirit of vengeance there can be no peace on the earth. God says, “Vengeance is mine.” Secondly, God commands, Thou shalt not “bear any grudge against the children of thy people.” Here God specifically gives instruction to his people not to cherish anger or keep a record, or reserve of wrongs or hurts done to them by their fellow men.

Jesus’ love which is eternal and divine cannot be affected by circumstances. It is unchanging and focuses more on the person than the action of the person. We are told by God’s servant that “Christ has borne with the erring through all his manifest perversity and rebellion. His love for the sinner does not grow cold, His efforts do not cease, and He does not give him up to the buffeting of Satan. He has stood with open arms to welcome again the erring, the rebellious, and even the apostate.”

How much do you know about Christ’s love? I have studied His love through the Holy Spirit and found that you can never reach the top of it, the width of it or the bottom of it. “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height”
(Ephesians 3:17,18).

Divine love could fill all the oceans on Earth, and there still would be love left over; it is just that mighty and wonderful. When you are rooted and grounded in that love, there will be no way of turning you away from Heaven. “And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge [all understanding], that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God” (Ephesians 3:19). When you are full of God, you will have all the love you need to help every sinner you can get to; and the more you use that love, the more it increases.

There is nothing in the world greater than the love of God. It will keep you going when nobody or nothing else will.

Divine love is a gift that is greater than all other gifts, and human knowledge cannot understand it. God demonstrated that love to us when He gave all He had to rescue sinful man. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”
(John 3:16).

Divine love is your protection, so you must stay full of that love all the time because the devil can’t take over a heart that is full of God’s love. The devil has no love, only hate. He even hates those in his own kingdom, and he punishes them no matter what they do because he is so cruel.

Only the power of the Holy Spirit can give us this type of love. At the same time, love is a choice, not an emotion. Love springs from an act of the will when we choose to obey Christ. Feelings or emotion may or may not be present. In fact, we may feel that a particular person is not deserving of our love.

The Bible assures us that “God is love.” The love that comes from God, divine Love, is tender, warm, constant, powerful, bringing to mind a mother’s love for a dear child. In Isaiah we read of God: “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands”
(49:15, 16). And St. Paul, in his letter to the Romans, assures us that nothing “shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”
(8:39).

God is the only genuine source of love and goodness, because God is Love itself, from which all pure expressions of love emanate. God alone can comfort, bring joy, and truly satisfy. Because Love is God, Love must be everywhere. Each one of us, as God’s offspring, has the divine right to understand and feel the immediate presence of Love.

This is the power of divine love which gives us hope. This is the power of God’s love which conquers evil. This is the power of agape love which renews people!

We receive the ability to love through the grace that comes from Christ! He can help us overcome our anger, bitterness, hatred, and any evil so that they no longer have any control over our lives. Through divine love, we find the freedom to discover our true nature – our identity as God’s beloved children.

When we look in the distance, and see no difference between our enemy and our friend – when we look at both with love, then we know that our night has ended and our day has begun.”
This is the power of love that can change the world!
