Mathew 18:18

The Church has been delegated kingdom authority to act on heaven’s behalf in history. This heavenly authority given to believers can be seen in Matthew 18:18-20 with the principle of “binding and loosing,” which means to forbid or to permit. Binding and loosing is the transfer of authority from eternity into time. It is the legal right to use power – a legitimate, God ordained right. Believers can pray to access this power.

Dictionary Definitions
The Greek word translated bind is the verb ‘deo’ and means: to bind (in various applications, literally or figuratively): – bind, be in bonds, knit, tie, wind (Strong’s Dictionary)

The Greek word translated loose is the verb ‘luo’ and means: to loosen (literally or figuratively): – break (up), destroy, dissolve, (un-) loose, melt, put off (Strong’s Dictionary).

There are prerequisites for binding and loosing, and believers should use these as keys to the kingdom. If we want to access kingdom authority, we must approach it biblically, not secularly. The reason many believers are not seeing more authority in their lives is because they are not using the delegated authority that God is giving from heaven. Instead, some believers are using earth’s authority, or mixing it with heaven’s authority. In doing so, heaven’s authority is canceled out. Believers must have unity and be in agreement for God’s presence to be manifested or shown. Jesus must be the centerpiece, and believers must pray in His name for successful binding and loosing.
When believers use the principle of binding and loosing the right way, sin is addressed, prayers are answered, and God’s power is free to be released in history. This is the result to be expected when we bind and loose based on God’s standard and criteria.

Some contend, as Jesus was speaking to Peter, that the Lord will build His church upon Peter; and the subsequent authority to bind and loose was given only to Peter, and Peter’s successors. However, the context and basis of, the blessing, and the authority to bind and loose, was not Peter, but the revelation of ‘the Christ’, who is the Word of God (John 1:14).

The mass of rock which Jesus is referring to is the full revelation from heaven of the Word of God. Jesus will build His church, not upon a man Peter but, upon the revelation knowledge of His Word. It is in this context that the authority to bind and loose is given. Therefore, every born-again Christian, who has received true revelation of the Word of God, has also been given the authority to bind and loose.

There are so many things that we pray for and we wait for God to respond when in fact God has already told us what to do. He has already given us the strategies that we need in order to succeed. God is not going to come to earth and do the things that He has already given the church the authority or ability to do.
That is what binding and loosing is all about. Using the spiritual authority we already have to carry out the work of the Kingdom.

There are so many people that are still walking around searching for the “keys of the kingdom of heaven” when God already gave it to us in this scripture. It is following the semi-colon “whatever YOU bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever YOU loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Imagine that you see something happening around you and you know it’s not right, it’s not godly, it’s demonic, it’s an injustice, it is a complete violation of the word of God (this is not your opinion or your feelings). Once you identify that this is not the will of God you have the authority to bind it up and to loose the Kingdom and all of it’s righteousness in place of that!

Jesus said, what we bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and what we loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Jesus is referring to spiritual power, where we can issue commands in His name and the authority and power of heaven will be released on the earth. Through this exercise of authority, we conform the earth to the will of God. To exercise spiritual authority, therefore, it is necessary for the Christian to be aware of, have revelation, and be filled with faith in the covenant promises of the Lord.

When you bind up something you think of the opposite to loose over the situation.
The prayer of binding and loosing is very effective if you use it as an offensive prayer. Don’t wait until you get into a situation or things get tense before you do this. If you know that you are about to face a confrontation or a bad situation you start binding and loosing before you even get to the scene. This will ensure that things are in order before you show up and God has already sent his angels to take care of it before you arrive.

We are to pray for the will of heaven to come to earth (Matthew 6:10). The will of heaven has been revealed through the covenant promises of the Scripture. Our responsibility is to bind the will of heaven, the covenant promises, to every aspect of our lives; and to loose-off our lives those devilish circumstances which oppose the will of heaven. The prayers of binding and loosing are authoritative actions which help to establish the will of the kingdom of heaven on the earth.

The Power of Heaven Enforces our Commands
The ‘keys’ of the kingdom of heaven symbolize the authority of the kingdom of heaven. When we bind and loose in the name of Jesus Christ we are assured that the power, and authority, of heaven will enforce our commands.

Losing
In Luke’s gospel, we see an example of a woman who is bound by a spirit of infirmity. And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself (Luke 13:11). Jesus said that the woman had been bound by Satan for all this time (Luke 13:16). Jesus loosened her from the bond. When Jesus saw her, He called her to Him, and said unto her, woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And He laid His hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God (Luke 13:12-13).

Jesus exercised His spiritual authority to loose-the woman from a devil spirit which had caused her physical affliction for eighteen years. In another example, Jesus opened a deaf and dumb man’s ears, and loosed his tongue (Mark 7:32-37)

Jesus said these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils (Mark 16:17). Jesus has given born again believers the authority to use His name to cast out, or loose, devil spirits and their influences from people’s lives.

Jesus has given His believers the authority to bind and loose on the earth. The foundation for this authority is revelation knowledge of the Scripture. Revelation knowledge comes as we meditate the Lord’s covenant promises. As the seed of God’s promises grows in our hearts, revelation knowledge will be a fruit. We exercise God’s authority on the earth through binding His precious Word to our lives and the lives of our loved ones. We similarly loose the devil spirits off our lives and the lives of our loved ones. The power of heaven will back what we bind and loose, in Jesus’ name.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
Thank you that you have given us the power to bind and loose on the earth. Thank you that you promise to use your power to back what we bind and loose. Please strengthen us to diligently meditate your covenant promises so we can receive the necessary revelation knowledge to exercise this authority. Please also give us the revelation and strength to exercise the keys of your kingdom through binding and loosing. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
