IN THE DAYS OF HIS POWER SERIES.

TOPIC: THE RACE IS NOT TO THE SWIFT NOR THE BATTLE TO THE STRONG

“I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.”
Ecclesiastes 9:11

The wisest man that ever lived sat one evening in his exquisite palace reflecting about life and declared by inspiration the words of Ecclesiastes 9: 11 above.

In his thoughts, he concluded that the happenings in a man’s life are a function of time and chance. Simply put, the times, seasons and opportunities of your life determine what you make of life and not necessarily your skill, talent or qualification. It is a reminder, that there is a higher force that controls life, the wise man called it ‘Time and Chance’, as believers, we call that force God, and this was confirmed by the Apostle Paul (So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy).

Nothing happens in your life by accident, every event is a connected piece of a series orchestrated by time and chance, which is authored by the Creator. There is, therefore, need for you as a believer to take charge of situations in your life through your prayers and confessions (Ephesians 5:16).
You should not view the daily events of your life as random happenings, but instead, learn to commune with the Spirit and hear from Him as you go through life.

The world tells you that those with the qualifications, talents and experience get the jobs, promotions and high salaries.
My friend, though you live in this world, as God’s beloved child, you need not be limited by it. You have God’s favor—His unmerited, unearned, undeserved grace! Ecclesiastes 9:11 tells us, “The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong…” This means that even if you are not the smartest, strongest, most knowledgeable or best looking in the natural, God can still give you good success when you depend on His grace.
It is His right hand, His arm and His favor that provide for you, fight for you, defend you and give you increase.

Know ye not that they which run in a race run all but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.”
I Corinthians 9:24

No matter how we see it, no one wants to fail. But in order not to fail we must run this race. Life is a race and as long as you are alive, you are in that race already whether you know it or not. It is amazing that so many do not know they are in a race, and this is not an excuse before God. In the portion we just read, the bible says: “…..so run that ye may obtain.” It is the desire of every athlete to win the prize. As a child of God, you are called to win only through the grace of God.
The preacher said, “I returned, and saw under the sun…… Which means that he had gone through a research and found out that no man makes it in life by power and might, but by the grace of God. “……time and chance happens to them all”. The grace of God makes out opportunities for success. Whatever you will achieve on earth is dependent on the grace of God in your life. Stop leaning on your own understanding, depend on grace and you will win the race.
Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

We are all involved in the race. Whether we like it or not
How can you run this race?
• You can run by yourself but it’s all by your strength: how long can you go with your strength in this complex and complicated life.
• You can walk instead of running
• But you can rest on eagle’s wings.
The swift: there is no assurance that the race will eventually belong to the swift. It’s almost certain if Usain Bolt runs with me, that he will win the race. But the race of life is different, the swift don’t always win. So who wins?
• The winner is always that man that has the grace of God.
The grace of God makes the difference in a man’s life.
Elijah outran Ahab that was on a chariot when the hand of grace came upon him (1kings 18:46). A chariot was like a jet plane in that time but a man on foot overtook one that was on it because God’s hand came upon him. So grace can be described as the hand of God coming upon you to do for you what you or nobody can do. There are things you can do without any one’s help. There are things you can only achieve with the help of others. But there is something God alone will achieve for you without your help or that of others. Elijah won the race by grace against one on a chariot.
• In Romans 9:16 – The bible says that it is not he that willeth nor he that runneth but God that showeth mercy”. You can will and run but if there is no grace, you will run out. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength says the scripture. Your strength must give way for God’s grace, if you want to make it.
Normally, the swiftest should win the race. Normally the strongest should win the battle. This is where I disagree with people who think they are either self made or that they can work hard to become made.
Looking through my bible, I realized that most of the time the strongest never wins and the fastest never wins. So why the rat race?
• David was not stronger than Goliath, yet he won that battle
• The Israelites were most of the time not better than the opponents yet they won battles.
• Mordecai was not stronger than Haman in king Xerxes kingdom yet together with Esther they defeated Haman’s plan in the book of Esther 3
It’s all about grace and his mercy. This race is not by who went to school
It’s all about grace and his mercy. This race is not by who is always 1st in class
I know someone, who had a friend who made 1st class from the university, while he made 3rd class and today he is far richer than the one with the 1st class.
It’s all about grace and his mercy. This race is not by who works harder even though hard work still pays.

So instead of mulling over your “disqualifications”, be conscious of God’s favor on you. Smile and say, “God’s favor is all over me because of Jesus. I expect good things to happen to me today!” Beloved, be conscious of His favor. Believe it. Confess it. And you will experience it!

Prayer Points:

  1. My days are redeemed by the blood of Christ and I daily obtain favour (Ephesians 5:16).
  2. Lord show me your mercy that my works and efforts shall not be in vain (Romans 9:16).
  3. Lord, help me to understand the times and seasons of my life, and to take steps that will favour me. Amen (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
    Confessions
  4. I declare over my life, that everything I venture into favors me.
  5. I am not a victim of bad times and chances in Jesus name. Amen. SHALOM!
