*“Who is he that saith and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not”*
Lamentations 3:37

Nothing can happen without God’s permission! Do you believe it? Well, whether you believe it or not, it is a fact. God is Sovereign. He is the King, the ruler or the boss. He calls the shots in the universe. Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it”. Therefore, it holds then that everything that happens in heaven or on earth is subject to God’s commands.

I hear some people even some socalled men of God  boasting of their ability to do and undo but from our text this morning it is very clear that man and devil have limited powers and it is God and God alone that can do and undo, He it is that shall command and it comes to pass without any body’s approval.

*“Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, but you have done nothing but bless them!” He answered, “Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”*
Numbers 23:11-12

Greed corrupted prophet Balaam; he sought wealth and lost his soul but even in his greed prophet Balaam acknowledged the supremacy and sovereignty of God despite his greed for filthy lucre been offered to him by Balak.

God is in charge of all things. Nothing can take place without Him sanctioning it. Life is not a series of random, freak accidents. Everything that happens is planned and orchestrated by Him. If we only grasp this truth and comprehend that fact, we will stop worrying about a lot of things because absolutely nothing happens without God’s permission. Even the devil has to seek his permission. Therefore God alone has the final say in our lives and the events of the world.

Even if we try, no one can manipulate or coerce God to do anything. He permits things to happen because they have a divine purpose. So even when it looks like God is not ruling, He is. When chaos appears, he is still in charge. When things start falling apart, He is still in charge. He is an expert at bringing good out of every bad situation. He will use any circumstance to fulfill his purpose.

*“The preparations of the heart in man, And the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD. All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; But the LORD weigheth the spirits. Commit thy works unto the LORD,”*
Proverbs 16:1

No one can tell God what to allow or not allow. He does what he wants, and no one can stand against him. Job came to that realization during his saga which led him to deep repentance for his foolish questioning of God’s plan. He also came to the awareness that God can do all things, and no plan of his can be thwarted” (Job 42:2).

*“Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, You are God.”*.
Psalm 90:2

You get the picture. To say God is sovereign is to say that He is unrivaled in majesty, unlimited in power and knowledge, and unaffected by anything outside Himself. He is outside of time and completely free to do whatever He wills to do anywhere, at any time, in every single detail without interference. He reigns, period. That is what it means to say God is sovereign.

There are innumerable events and circumstances in our lives that are beyond our control. Fear and worry can haunt us, arrest us, paralyze us. If God is not in control, then I ought to be afraid! If I think this universe runs according to luck, I ought to worry. But when I see that He is there in the details, controlling, directing, ruling them for my good, I am strengthened and given courage to obey Him.

God’s question in Lam. 3:37 gets to the crux of the subject: “Who is there who speaks and it happens, unless the Lord has ordained [it]?” If no plan of God’s can be thwarted by human actions or acts of nature, if He rides every storm and directs all things with purpose for His glory and my good, then He is worthy to be trusted with every fiber of my being.
