IN THE DAYS OF HIS POWER SERIES.

TOPIC: FEAR NOT WHEN THE ENEMY COMES IN LIKE A FLOOD

“When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.”
Isaiah 59:19.

When the enemy comes in like a flood, you can rest assured it is not because you are doing something wrong, but it is because you are doing something right. So let me encourage you in your spiritual walk and share with you some of the things I have learned about how the enemy attacks you and how you can overcome them.

When the enemy shall come in the greatest force against the people of God, at such times God’s Holy Spirit shall put forth his glorious power, and a standard shall be lifted up against the inroads of the foe.

It is easy to look around and see how hard it all is, to feel overwhelmed by the raging waters, the wind and the rain. Living through a “flood” season feels like it is draining all of your spiritual and emotional strength, but that will not happen if you continually replenish your spirit. Staying connected to the Spirit of God will be what keeps your head above water and means spending time in His presence in worship, strengthening your faith roots through His Word and communing with Him daily in prayer. The floods will come and go, but they don’t have to destroy your life if you’re anchored to the Solid Rock!

It is well for us distinctly to understand the position of the Christian. This is not the land of our triumph, neither is this the period of our rest. If we bind our brows with laurel, and cast aside our armour, our folly will be extreme. The ship is not yet in the harbour, many storms must yet beat upon her. The warrior has not slain the last of his foes, neither has the pilgrim fought with the last of the giants. The moment of conversion is rather the commencement than the closing of spiritual warfare, and until the believer’s head shall recline upon the pillow of death he will never have finished his conflicts. The war will not be over till we shall depart and be with Christ, which is far better. Beloved Christian, you are in the land where foes abound. There are enemies within you; you are not clean nature delivered from the influence of inbred sin. The new nature is of divine origin, and it cannot sin because it is born of God; but the old nature, the carnal mind, is there too, and it is not reconciled to God, neither indeed can be; and therefore it strives and struggles with the new nature. The house of Saul in our heart wars against the house of David, and tries to drive it out and despoil it of the crown. This conflict you must expect to have continued with more or less of violence till you enter into rest. Moreover, in the world without there are multitudes of foes. This vain world is no friend to the principle of the work of grace. If you were of the world the world would love its own, but as you are not of the world but of a heavenly race, you may expect to be treated as an alien and foreigner, nay, as a hated and detested foe. All sorts of snares and traps will be laid for you; those who sought to entangle the Master in his speech will not be more lenient towards you. Moreover there is one whose name is called “the enemy,” the “evil one;” he is the leader among your adversaries; hating God with all his might, he hates that which he sees of God in you. He will not spare the arrows in his infernal quiver; he will shoot them all at you. There are no temptations which he knows of—and he understands the art well from long practice—they are no temptations which he will not exercise upon you. He will sometimes fawn upon you, and at other times will frown; he will lift you up, if possible, with self-righteousness, and then cast you down with despair. You will always find him your fierce, insatiable foe. Know this then, and put on the whole armour of God; march with your sword always drawn in your hand, as one who sees a foe in the path.

You need to understand that the weapons of our warfare are not physical but spiritual. (2 Cor. 10:4) If you are going to fight a spiritual battle, you have to use the weapons that work in that realm.
These weapons are prayer, fasting, and the word of God. When you are in a spiritual battle, you need to increase your prayer time, skip some meals, and get into the word of God for both direction and the building of your faith.

The enemy wants to “steal, kill and destroy” (John 10:10) – God has raised up a standard against Satan- Jesus Christ! The Solid Rock! Psalm 77:16-19 says, “The waters saw You, O God. The waters saw You; they were afraid; the depths also trembled. The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered. Your arrows flashed about. The sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind, and Your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook. Your way is through the sea, and Your path in the great waters, and your footsteps are not seen.” Never let Satan convince you that his flood is going to overpower you or destroy you. Anchor down onto the Rock! Your God beats a path through the great waters, like a flood, and He rages toward the enemy so hard and so fast that He doesn’t even leave a footprint. With you, through you, for you and to rescue you. No flood of Satan could ever match the power of the King over the Flood!

Strengthen Your Faith in the Power of God Over the Enemy:

David called the Lord “the Rock that is higher than I” and “the Rock of my Salvation” – and leaned heavily on those promises through the many storms of his life. That doesn’t make the experience of the storm less violent or raging, but the promise you have through Christ is that you have a foundation upon which to stand so you will not be shaken. When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Lord will show Himself to be your rock and He will provide for you higher ground upon which to stand or dry ground upon which to walk. Amen!

Satan absolutely and unequivocally fears the name of the Lord. His name is Jesus! From the rising of the sun, each day, the enemy is terrified of the glory of God. Why? Because you are changed and transformed into the image of God “from glory to glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18) as you behold Him in His presence: WORSHIP. This is why the enemy wants you to fear the flood, when in reality the King over the flood is on your side!

“So shall they fear
The name of the Lord from the west,
And His glory from the rising of the sun;
When the enemy comes in like a flood,
The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.”
Isaiah 59:19

Though the forces that are against us are strong, that power that God has given to us is stronger.
“Greater is He that is in you than he that…”
“You shall receive power, after the Holy Spirit.”

The standard that the Spirit lifts is the Word of God.

When the enemy came as a flood against Jesus.
He seems to know when to attack.

Jesus had been fasting 40 days and was hungry.

Use God’s power to feed your own flesh.
Jesus used the Word, “It is written…”
“Thy Word have I hidden in my heart…”

When once God cometh into the fight, woe unto you who are his enemies! woe unto you! you may quit yourselves like men, but you know the might of Israel’s sword in ancient times, and ye shall feel it now. Soldiers of Jesus, never despair! My brethren, do not even fear. Be of good courage! Be confident! God is on our side. “Immanuel”— let that be your watch-word— “God with us— Immanuel.” Be ye very courageous and very earnest, and the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard when the enemy cometh in like a flood. God grant it for his name’s sake. Amen.
