“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them”
— Mark 16:17,18

Following the words of Jesus in the verses above, the Christian can’t be poisoned. It makes no difference how the poison is administered. Why is this so? The Bible tells us in Leviticus 17:11, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood….” When people are poisoned, the poison gets into their system through the blood vessels to wreak havoc.

`Nothing shall by any means hurt you’

Christ Jesus said to his disciples unequivocally, “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Was this intended to apply only to Jesus’ immediate disciples and to sensational experiences like treading on serpents and scorpions? A lot of people take this view and feel that it would be presumptuous for us to aspire to such dominion and freedom. But others have found that Jesus’ promises do apply to everyone, throughout all time, and that no circumstance is too small to prove it. Such proof does require more, however, than just repeating the Master’s words in a ritualistic fashion. We have to grasp something of the teachings that underlie the promises and adopt this spiritual standpoint more completely in everything we think and do.

However, being born again, and having received the Holy Spirit, your body doesn’t live by blood anymore. The life of the flesh, for the unregenerate man, is the blood, but now that you’re born again, Christ is your life (Colossians 3:4).

TESTIMONY OF A MISSIONARY
The native witch-doctor and sorcerer fraternity are our relentless enemies. We expose their frauds, deliver their victims, and rob them by our gospel of both income and prestige. These men are expert poisoners. They think nothing of putting their opposers out of the way by a concoction of kimpengele or mwavi bark, or by any one of a dozen less-known deadly roots and fruits that grow everywhere in these forests.
We have evidence that they have tried repeatedly to poison us. One day my chum and I were enjoying a delicious plate of palm-nuts that had been brought to us as a present. We had about finished them when a young man ran up excitedly and whispered, ‘White man, on no account must you eat those palm-nuts, they are poisoned’. We had already eaten them, however. So we knelt and committed ourselves to God, claiming the promise of Mark 16:17-18: ‘These signs shall follow them that believe; if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them”. We felt absolutely no ill effects from the palm-nuts and for years I hesitated to speak of the incident, lest there had been some mistake, and the nuts had not been poisoned. Then I became very friendly with a converted ex-medicine-man and spirit-consultant. He opened his heart to me with unusual freedom, and when I remarked, ‘You know that your poisons could not harm us’, he laughed as he replied, ‘Yes, we (witch-doctors) have all found that out. I was the one who sent you the poisoned palm-nuts from Kanguba, but our poisons which kill other people have no effect on you christians’.

The Bible says in Romans 8:11, “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.” The word “quicken” means to “make alive” or “give life to.” The day you received the Holy Spirit, He quickened your physical body. He became the life of your physical body. Your life doesn’t depend on blood anymore.

Understand this: anything that affects or destroys the blood can’t, and shouldn’t have any effect on you. This is what we mean when we say the Christian can’t be infected or isn’t susceptible to any kind of sickness or disease. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead has vitalized your body such that no infection can survive or thrive in your body.

The Holy Spirit perambulates in you to see to it that you’re in perfect health, warding off any anomaly that may or could occur with your physical body (2 Corinthians 6:16). Hallelujah!

Certainly, beyond the human power of endurance one can be weighed down but God has not forsaken us or has stopped loving us. Once, when Jesus was in the boat with his disciples, He told them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” (Mark 4:35) Believing that they would cross over to the other side, He fell asleep in the ship. A great storm arose, but it could not rouse Him from His sleep, only the cries of His terrified disciples did. They had forgotten what Jesus had said about them crossing over to the other side. They had also forgotten that with Jesus in the boat with them, there was no possibility of them going down. Nothing could by any means hurt them because Jesus was with them. God in His sovereignty allows desperate trials so that He would know that He is in us and as we trust and look to Him in faith He gives us grace to bring us to victory (2 Cor. 12: 7-10) Even being thrown into a fiery furnace could not hurt three young Hebrew men because they believed that God would deliver them. They had proclaimed to the heathen King Nebuchadnezzar, “… our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king.” (Dan 3:17)
Finally, in the midst of their fiery trial, their deliverer not only walked with them in the fire, He also delivered them from all harm. King Nebuchadnezzar even said, “Look! I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” (Dan. 3:25) Of a truth, we can be under the most difficult of circumstances or rather be pressed out of measure above strength and we do entertain some fear because we are human; but the good news that Scriptures gives to us now is that fainting; panic trusting in ourselves is not Scriptural. We should trust in God Who raiseth the dead and delivered us before and is still delivering us now and will yet deliver us from any form of death in future because Jesus is with you and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

All these shall be your portion If only you are going to believe in Christ and claim all his promises.
As you believe the unfailing promises of God, you will overcome.
